We provide high quality training programs for individuals who perform/interpret spirometry and other respiratory diagnostic tests. Our mission is to improve the quality of respiratory diagnostic testing and to provide ongoing support for healthcare professionals. Our programmes are lead by a highly experienced, Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) qualified Healthcare Scientist.
The problem
Respiratory related hospital admissions are rising year on year. Now more than ever, early and accurate respiratory testing is vital to better manage lung conditions, improve quality of life and reduce the number of hospital admissions. Despite this clear need, currently around a third of people with a first hospital admission for a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation have not been previously diagnosed (1).
The same issues occur with with our children and young people (CYP) A review of asthma related deaths found that the quality of asthma care is worse for CYP compared to all ages (2). Objective tests such as spirometry and reversibility are essential to avoid misdiagnosis however healthcare professionals performing and interpreting CYP testing have additional barriers including lack of funding for training.
The importance of quality assured diagnostic testing is clear. NHS England advocates that healthcare professionals should have received spirometry training and show competence (on the ARTP national register) however ARTP no longer provide this training. This leaves healthcare professionals with the responsibility of working out which independent provider they should use.
